I avoided having my Book Launch like the plague.
t was not until the third book was published when my sisters, Judith Gentles and Joanne Watt, told me it was time and set the wheels in motion. I had no choice, it is not easy to stand up to those two when they knock heads together.
A typical writer, I shy away from anything that will make me the center of attention. We writers hide behind our computers, quietly taking in everything that happens around us, to file away for future use.
After weeks of going between attacks of anxiety and bouts of confidence, the day finally arrived. I stood by the steps clutching a glass of red wine and did not exhale until the first twenty quests arrived. I had been having nightmares that no one would show up. Having got past that, I was suddenly faced with people pushing books at me to sign. I can't tell you how unreal that was.
By the time the speeches started, I knew I was home and dry. I looked around the room, my guests were having a good time. My husband had the 'well done Jennifer' look on his face, and that pleased me more than anything else. But the best was yet to come.
Maxine Walters, who did the Introductions and Dr. Christine Cummings who reviewed the books put the evening into overdrive. I had several more unreal moments, wondering if they were really talking about me. The guests seemed to agree with some of what was being said as loud clapping penetrated my fog of unreality. Note to self ( and others who may be planning a book Launch), get the damn thing recorded.
Thanks to the sisters, Copy Cat, Alibi, and all who made the evening memorable. Love and thanks for my Wolmers' Girls for their support, especially Marguerite Newland who read excerpts from the books, and Marjorie Anderson Simpson for all her help and encouragement.
